We Are Working For More Health Equity
Working For More Health Equity's primary goal is to encourage projects that work towards preventing treatable disease and maintaining good health. We aim to provide information and resources that will enable everyone to make good health care choices and ensure that we all have easy access to these resources and health care professionals. We aim to work with vulnerable members of our community who do not have easy access to Health and Wellness programs.

Mission
Our mission is to ensure that every individual —regardless of circumstance or socioeconomic status—has an opportunity to live a robust and healthy life by funding and supporting initiatives that foster and enhance well-being throughout our community.

ABOUT
Founder
Dr. Shelley Spaner

Dr. Shelley Spaner is a Calgary radiologist and partner at Mayfair Diagnostics. She founded the not for profit group Women for Men’s Health in 2016 – an initiative that encouraged women to become active players in closing the gender gap with respect to health and wellness. That group was extremely successful - raising more than $2.1 million dollars. The money raised funded a series of projects in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Center including the opening of A Men's Health Clinic in 2018, read about the opening here, and culminating in the opening of the Jun Kakawami Legacy Prehabilitation Clinic in 2024.
The group has reorganized in 2024 - widening its mandate to include all members of our community that need help in reaching their health and wellness goals.
“My father and I used to talk about how great it would be if there was a place people could go to for all of their medical and wellness needs. The Women For Men's Health Initiative was successful in helping to build on a sort of one-stop shop for men’s health,” says Dr. Spaner. “Now we want to extend our reach further. We are excited to work with vulnerable members of our community and help them to reach their health and wellness goals.”

Melissa Bond

Melissa Bond is a lawyer in Calgary, serving as a Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Government of Alberta, managing a team of Crown prosecutors.
In her 20 years as a Crown prosecutor and in her personal life Melissa has seen the material impact that access to meaningful health programs, education and community support can have on an individual’s quality of life and family relationships. In 2020, Melissa’s mother was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease and she and her family have experienced how challenging navigating the health care system can be and how difficult it can be to find information about, and access to, available resources.
Melissa is excited about contributing to the role that WFMHE can play in providing individuals with the tools and support to make healthy choices and improve their quality of life.
